about

About the Directors
Oryan Peterson-Jones and Andrew Pritchard are long-time friends and and musical collaborators. They spent the last decade recording and performing with Portland’s psychedelic-rock collective, Datura Blues, and act as the driving force behind BPBS Arts & Media; a grassroots film production crew, events/tour coordinators, promotions street team, boutique cassette record label, and field recordings archive. Peterson-Jones’ studies in ethnomusicology and Pritchard’s degree in film have often provided an enthusiastic vehicle for their shared interests in travel, language, and World Music. Their creative relationship wouldn’t evolve to include filmmaking, however, until after their first trip to Cuba in 2015.

In 2017 they released footage from that first trip as a fifteen minute featurette about Rumba street musicians and Grammy winning Cuban Jazz artists. Titled: Eyes of Stone & Water, the zero budget, low-fi, short film serves as a preamble to the pair’s current documentary project, which returns to the same subject material and characters. This material, filmed in Havana during their second visit to Cuba in 2017, features more in-depth interviews, higher production value, and offers a deep-dive into the different aspects of the intersection between Cuban music, class, and culture.

In 2019, BPBS Arts & Media released ¡Gracias, Santiago!, the filmmakers’ second cinematic exploration of the Caribbean island. Filmed on location in Santiago de Cuba during the week of Carnaval. ¡Gracias, Santiago! is a hypnotic journey into the sights, sounds, colors, movements and culture of Carnaval in Cuba. An experimental documentary in the style of Koyaanisqatsi and Baraka
